Grant Helps Care for School Kids
The Sharkey Family Foundation has awarded a grant for $7,500 to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation in support of the School Nurse program. The Asante Ashland School Nurse program has been providing the services of 2.05 FTE nurses to elementary and middle school children in the Ashland and Phoenix-Talent school districts for over 20 years. Nurses provide the full range of health care including physical, mental and dental services to children and their families each year.
There are almost 3,000 children attending schools in Ashland and Talent and 1,267 of those are living at or below poverty. The School Nurse Program is a valued program in our community and integral to the academic success of our children. A student’s health status is directly related to his or her ability to learn. The program is funded jointly by Asante Ashland Community Hospital, Ashland and Phoenix-Talent School Districts, and grants made to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation.
Thank you to the Sharkey Family Foundation for supporting this important program and thanks to our school nurses, Belinda Brown, RN, Brenda Schweitzer, RN, and Erin-Hope Sholty, LPN for keeping our school children healthy!
