The Reed and Carolee Walker Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation has awarded a grant to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation for $30,000 in support of the School Nurse Program for elementary and middle schools in the Ashland and Phoenix-Talent school districts.

The grant will be used to provide the services of 2 full-time equivalent registered nurses for the two school districts.

For 19 years, the Asante Ashland Community Hospital, in partnership with the Ashland School District, the Phoenix-Talent School District and the Oregon Community Foundation, has been providing the services of registered nurses stationed at elementary and middle school sites. The School Nurse Program provides the full complement of health services including routine injury and illness care, dental education, mental health assessments and parent counseling for an average of 18-22 children and their families each day.

The Ashland Community Hospital Foundation also recently received a $500 grant from the Ashland Food Co-op for the “Healthy Foods-an Alternative to Medication” program started by school nurse, Belinda Brown. The Healthy Foods program is also supported by Shop’n Kart located in Ashland.
