Healthy Foods–an Alternative to Medication Program

Thanks once again to Eric Chaddock, Manager of  Shop ‘n Kart for continuing to support the Healthy Foods-an Alternative to Medication Program.  This program was implemented in 2014 by Belinda Brown, RN as part of the Asante Ashland Community Hospital School Nurse Program when Belinda realized children were seeking medication to relieve symptoms of hunger. On a typical day, the school nurses see between 18 and 22 children at each of the Ashland and Talent middle school sites. Of these,  between 2 and 4 children are complaining of physical symptoms such as stomach aches and headaches, the result of inadequate nutrition. However with support from Shop ‘n Kart and the Ashland Food Co-op, fruit, drinks and healthy snacks are available for students throughout the school day. This is the fourth year that Shop ‘n Kart has supported the program with a grant in the amount of $2000.  Thanks to them, hungry students can continue to have healthy snacks, and also learn about creating healthy  eating habits!
