Dick & Jean Bernard
Bernards Lay Firm Foundation for Support
Dick and Jean Bernard can attest to the fact that when you raise a family in Ashland, you will inevitably use the Hospital to set a broken bone, treat an illness or deliver a baby or two. But Dick and Jean have done more than simply use Ashland Community Hospital. They have supported it with their time, talents and financial gifts for 30 years.
Back in 1978, the Bernards decided they were ready to make a change and leave their native Chicago. They searched the country for just the right climate and social atmosphere, and they settled on Ashland.
While Dick worked hard to launch a new precision cutting-tool business with his son, David, Jean got involved in the community, eventually joining the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation Board in 1983 and serving as President from 1988 to 1989. She is proud that during her involvement, the Foundation Board established the Patron Campaign, the Gala, the Endowment Fund, and also set up term limits.
An active participant on many local Boards, Dick joined the ACH Foundation Board in 1995, served as President from 2001-2002 and has been active on the Finance, Real Estate and Board Development Committees during his tenure, which continues today. Son David has been Hospital Board President and daughter-in-law Marge is an ER nurse, so Hospital involvement is truly a family affair.
In recognition of their loyalty, expertise and financial gifts to ACH, the Bernards received the Distinguished Service Award in 2006. But winning awards is not what motivates them. “We got involved because we felt it was important to keep the Hospital going and growing,” says Jean. Dick concurs. “We love Ashland, and we think the Hospital is one of the real assets of living here. It’s only 10 minutes away, the care is exceptionally good and we know most of the physicians. It’s truly a blessing.”
“Both of us have really enjoyed working with the dedicated Hospital staff and Foundation Board members,” says Jean. “Most people only get involved with the Hospital when they need it, but we urge people to support it with their time and financial gifts on a regular basis so it will be there when you do need it.” All contributions to Ashland Community Hospital Foundation are deductible to the extent legally allowed.
