School Kids Get a Boost
Grant Supports the School Nurse Program
The School Nurse program of Asante Ashland was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from The Sharkey Foundation. It is the fourth consecutive year the foundation has lent its support to the program.
Since 1997 the Asante Ashland has been providing school nurses in K-8 schools in the Ashland and Phoenix-Talent School Districts. The nurses are embedded in the schools and see approximately 20 students per day, and more than 2,900 per year. They see children for health needs, including dental screenings and mental health assessments. Belinda Brown, RN has been overseeing the program since it began. “The needs of the children often go beyond the physical,” Belinda explains. “Our nurses treat the whole child, developing trusting relationships with the family as well. This level of compassionate care helps kids get their needs met so they can thrive at school and at home.
In the fall of 2019 the School Nurse program will be expanding to serve all K-12 school children in Ashland, Talent and Phoenix schools. The number of students cared for will increase to over 5,400. The grant from The Sharkey Foundation will help support the additional cost to support the program expansion.
